Thaala Bentota is located on the best beach strip along Sri Lanka’s western coastline. The property is 99 km from Bandaranaike International Airport and 66 km away from the city of Colombo.

Designed by world-renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, who took inspiration from an 18th-century Dutch village. The property has a contemporary feel and offers a tropical island beachside haven. Thaala Bentota houses two outdoor pools and ample parking facilities.

Wonderful

Nice staff. Large windows overlooking the ocean in our room. Well designed pool and bar area. What more can you want from a relaxing resort?

Some deterioration of rooms and amenities typical to a damp environment should be attended to more frequently. For example the toilet faucet was dripping a bit and it was hard to completely shut off.

Apart from initial mix up with room our stay was very enjoyable and the staff very friendly. The buffet breakfast had an

The pool. The cleaners who cleaned our room made it special with an elephant made out of towels and frangipani flowers. Also the lady making the hoppers at breakfast always had a smile on her face. And kids loved the croquet game run by staff.

No reply to messages sent 1 month before arrival and also no reply to browns hotel email when tried to contact directly. We found this strange as we had booked a lot of other hotels throughout Sri lanka who had all replied to messages.Also on arrival they tried to put us in a lessor room then one we had booked and it only had beds for 3 people not 4. When we raised this on entering the room we were taken back to reception and then told our room had been overbooked and we could have lessor room then move to one we booked next day. After back and forth we finally spoke with resort manager who then upgraded us to the bungalow which was very nice.

Ok for a short stay, great location

The hotel is in a good location , near to the station and town with direct access to the beach. The room was large with a nice balcony looking out to the garden and beach. The pool was a good size and not busy during our stay which was ideal. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The room and furnishings were a little tired with some damage to fixtures and fittings as well as a smell of damp. Cushions for pool loungers were heavily stained and had a strong odour.

Very nice spot in front of the sea.

Amazing room looking like an apartment. Access to a huge beach having access to others hotels in the area. Two very nice swimming pools. Nice breakfast. Restaurant and pub provided with a nice terrace

Very Good

Breakfast was superb. Staff wonderful - special mention to Wasana (who managed to get my room changed) Sandaruwan for the explanation of how things worked and Ranjan on front desk. Also all the boys in the bar!

The pools and gardens were stunning and very clean. The buffet breakfast was ok but a lot of the food was very foreign to us, therefore the kids didn’t get value for money as they lived on fries. The staff made up the rooms beautifully every morning and the balconies had a gorgeous view of a clean beach. It was a little disappointing that the a la carte restaurant was closed during our stay and there was a lack of evening entertainment. Otherwise the staff were friendly and helpful. Chatters bar has a good choice of cocktails.

Our room had a musty smell. The wooden floor appeared to be water damaged and this could have been the cause. When we received our bill at the buffet, we were charged for 4 Lion. We alerted the waiter and told him we only had 2 beers. He refused to believe us and insisted on charging us for 3 beers. Our group did not have another buffet!!

The manager Mr. Raj was a good man. Me upgraded the rooms for us. We a note that the suits r located at the 1st level and they both have elevators. Incase u r disable or require special assistance there is a problem there.

The house keeping staff needs more training as in how to help or to assist the guest.

Nothing.

This is a 3 star hotel not 5 star. Its extremely run down, rooms are super humid, mold on the bed side lamps, bathroom is dirty, broken toilet roll holder. Breakfast and dinner buffet are really 3 star quality. coffee is self service and u can only get a bad quality filtered coffee. When having breakfast be prepared to sit next to 2 tables of employees (managers) eating same time, while all waiters focus on them and do not offer service to the real guests anymore. Felt like in a canteen. Took over 1.5h to finally check into our rooms as the rooms were still dirty at 7pm due to not enough staff to clean the rooms... We asked for a baby bed and when they brought it we found the matress wrapped in a sheet for a kind size bed all stuffed under the matress so it was like a matress on a mountain of feed. No way the baby could sleep in it. The list goes on..this was seriously such a waste of time and money. Overall the pictures on Booking are soooo far away from reality. They really used a lot of Photoshop.

Stay away from this Hotel. Over priced for 2 star hotel. Rooms are warm and can't go to sleep

Nothing to like. Hotel is beyond economicall repair. AC unit is split type and temperature want go below 23.5c / noisy. U can hear the train everytime it passes behind the Hotel. Hotel allows locals to access pool for small price unfortunately it cramps the pool and reciption. Rooms balcony has no privacy. Technically you are sitting with 2 neighbors. Hotel should not be rated more than 2 stars

SUCH a beautiful hotel - the grounds are beautiful with 2 swimming pools and plenty of space for a volleyball of football game! The staff are incredible, very easy to get along with and work really hard!! Our stay was perfect!

Overall good except for a few things

The hotel is in a good location set just back from the beautiful Bentota beach with its huge sweep of golden sand. It is low rise and comfortable, with a large pool. I may say that in the general facilities are quite good. In its earlier years this hotel must have been truly a 5* hotel. You can imagine its days of glory. Now 5* are overrated. It's no luxury here and the hotel needs a complete overhaul. The stuff is the only one who is 5*: very helpful and kind. Although we checked out at 12, they let us linger 3 hours more at the pool( our train to Colombo arrived at 3.40) and we were given towels and beach beds. It was very nice taking into consideration that on our arrival day we could not enjoy the pool entirely because of some kind of "event". Also we were welcomed with cold drinks. The breakfast was very good too but I only ate fresh, on the spot made food: delicious egg hoppers ( you should try it), omelette and gaufre. I'll give that to this hotel. WIFI is very good and the bed very comfortable.

We had a basic room booked last minute but still even a basic room in a 5* should be impeccable. Our room reflected a lack of maintenance. The room was clean but the bathroom not so much. No complimentary water in the room. I don't want freebies but our minibar was empty too and I was thirsty. Also we arrived during the weekend and an 'event' was held outside the hotel witch lasted almost all afternoon and was incredibly loud. I was told by reception that during weekend many locals come to enjoy here. I do not have a problem if they behave properly. But they took up the entire pool, bumping and tossing so I could swim only after they left. Some people entered the water with their travelling clothes on although you should shower before entering the pool or if your religion says otherwise at least to slip into new cleaned clothes before entering the pool.

A good place to stay

The location right on the beach, the large green garden with 2 pools and a delicious breakfast (the hoppers were highly appreciated!).

The bed was in used condition, the mattress not to the standard we can expect in such hotel. The room, not far from the reception was quite noisy.
